Cults cause harm and are far more common than publicly known. It’s not their beliefs that make them dangerous, but their levels of coercion, manipulation and control. These dynamics can occur anywhere — in spiritual movements, self-help programs or fringe churches.
People trapped in cults are not weak, lost or gullible. Many were born into such groups and had no choice. No one is immune to undue influence, no matter how intelligent, educated or self-aware.
Across Aotearoa New Zealand, an estimated 50,000 people are affected by cultic groups as current or former members. Most of them suffer lasting social, emotional, financial and health-related consequences from slave labour or sexual, physical and spiritual abuse. Children raised in high-demand groups are the most impacted – and the most invisible victims.
These are important human rights and mental health issues that deserve professional attention, not mockery or sensationalism. It’s time to change that conversation — and take action.
Decult is a volunteer-run charity dedicated to increasing public understanding, reducing stigma, and improving support for people impacted by coercive groups.
Our work was recognised with the global 2025 Champion of Change Advocate award from the Freedom Train Project and the 2026 Margaret T Singer award from the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA).

Since then, we’ve been involved with:
The upcoming Decult 2026 conference will build on this momentum with a wider reach and an expanded international programme. In the meantime, we’re continuing to support local initiatives and survivor-led projects across the country.
Take a look at our PLANS AND PROJECTS to see what’s next — and how you can help make it happen. Together, we can drive real change and offer hope to those affected by cultic harm. Let’s decult our communities!

Spiritual abuse occurs when religious or spiritual beliefs are manipulated to control, frighten or harm someone. It can silence questioning, enforce submission and exploit faith for power. Survivors often face deep emotional and psychological scars.
