WHAT IS DECULT?

Coercive control in spiritual groups, churches and self-help organisations is a human rights and a mental health issue. More than 50,000 people in Aotearoa New Zealand are current or former members of cults, many living with lasting trauma.

Decult raises public awareness, reduces stigma and amplifies the voices of those affected. As a charity, we’re creating networks, events, peer support group and media resources to reduce cultic harm. The inaugural Decult 2024 conference was a sold-out success with wide media coverage.

Our volunteer work was recognised with the global 2025 Champion of Change Advocate award from the Freedom Train Project and the 2026 Margaret T Singer award from the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA).
